Manchester by the Sea (2017) Review

Posted on

Hey guys! Trying to be more consistent and produce more content so I’m here with a quick turnaround to review “Manchester by the Sea”. Manchester by the Sea tells the story of Lee Chandler  and shows how his life is turned upside down when his brother Joe Chandler passes away and Lee is forced to come back to his old hometown of Manchester by the Sea where he must face his fatherless nephew and demons of his past.

la-et-manchester-by-the-sea-trailer
Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT RIGHT:

1. Cinematography, the cinematography in this film was absolutely jaw dropping. Some of the shots in this movie were some of the best I have ever seen in my life. There are a few silent moments in this film and the Cinematography in those moments was captivating.

2. I was surprised on how comedic this movie was, there were many funny parts and funny moments that took me off guard. The last thing I expected was to laugh during this movie, but it was a pleasant surprise.

3. Of course Casey Affleck does an excellent job playing the character of Lee Chandler.

4. This film made me fall in love with the people in it, it felt like they were all one big family. Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler pack a pretty heavy punch in this one.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT WRONG:

1. This isn’t really the movies fault, but while he gave a wonderful performance; Casey Affleck did not just blow me off my feet and I by no means think he has Best Actor in the bag come Oscars night. I think he can very much win it, but he will have competition.

2. This film was quiet when it needed to speak, felt like the character of Lee was a little too numb, but nothing terrible.

3. Could have been about 15-20 minutes shorter.

Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea.

SUMMARY: Manchester by the Sea is a beautiful film and tells a heart wrenching story of love, loss, and finding a way to move forward. This film is awesome and deserves all the acclaim it is getting.

OVERALL GRADE: 8/10

Moonlight (2016) Review

Posted on

How’s it going guys? Since it’s been so long, I owe you guys more reviews, so here is my second review of the day! Today, I am going to be reviewing the highly acclaimed Moonlight. I had been wanting to see this one for a while so I didn’t have much more to do and I went to my local Cinema and saw it! Moonlight is a once in a lifetime film that captures the story of a young man named Chiron and the story of his struggle of being homosexual while growing up in the inner streets of Miami.

HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!! DO NOT GO PAST THIS POINT IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE!!

moonlight1
Mahershala Ali as Juan in Moonlight.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT RIGHT:

1. Mahershala Ali creates an absolutely stunning character in his portrayal of Juan, I knew he was getting a lot of acclaim for his performance, but man this dude is amazing. Loved the passion and emotion he was able to show in this role. I found myself wanting to be friends with this character. Ali captivated me with his role, I can’t wait to see him and Dev Patel duke it out for Best Supporting Actor come Oscars night.

2.  I loved how the film was broken up into three acts, it was a very organized system that showed very unique views into three stages of Chiron’s life. Barry Jenkins is a simply amazing Director, this film seemed to be done by someone who has been in the industry for decades and yet Jenkins is a relative newcomer to major films. This guy is going to be a legend when it’s all said and done.

3. The score gave me the chills, it was earth shattering and beautiful. I’ve never heard a score that gave me so many emotions and feelings. However, La La Land  will more than likely take home the Oscar for Best Score, but do not sleep on this one. Moonlight is coming to the Oscars to scrap.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT WRONG:

1. Killing off Mahershala Ali’s character in the first thirty minutes was an absolutely terrible idea. Although the entire cast is amazing, I feel like it was a absolute terrible decision to kill off your best actor and most captivating character in the first chapter of the film. I fell in love with this character with what little bit of screen time he had, I can’t imagine if he had been in the whole movie.

2. Ending was not really satisfying, it left me wanting more and I felt as though Chiron deserved a more wrapped up conclusion.

Young Chiron in Moonlight.

SUMMARY: Moonlight is a cinematic masterpiece, The shots, story, and plot were all amazing. Although there were a few shortcomings, this film is nothing short of exceptional and will make plenty of noise come Oscars night!

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8/10

The Founder (2017) Review

Posted on

What’s up guys? Been a minute, but I’m back with THREE new articles today so I hope you enjoy all of them! Let’s get this review started! Today I am reviewing the The Founder, the story of Ray Kroc and his vicious tale of how he turned around one little burger joint with maybe five other locations into the 95 billion dollar empire it is today!

thefounder-michael-keaton
Micheal Keaton as Ray Kroc in The Founder.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT RIGHT:

1. Casting Michael Keaton, he was simply built for this role. Originally, Tom Hanks was cast as the lead, but Keaton seemed to be made for this. Feel like he was snubbed for an Oscar nomination.

2. Supporting cast was brilliant, they flowed with Keaton and they weren’t afraid to challenge him. The chemistry of the cast and flow of the story blended perfectly.

3. Storytelling, hands down the biggest thing I got from this film was shock, I had absolutely zero clue how McDonald’s began and I promise the watcher will be shocked once they learn how it came to be. This story starts out in beginning as light and fun, but by the end it is cold blooded and ruthless. Excellent description of the journey and a excellent pace.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT WRONG:

1. Easily could have had some better Cinematography, this movie takes place in a bunch of locations and I feel like the Cinematography was not taken advantage of.

2. Did not market itself well enough with the right promotion and advertising. I feel like this movie could have been a huge hit if people knew more about it, but it’ll probably barley make back what it cost to make it and be out of cinemas soon.

michael-keaton-in-the-founder-2
Seems so nice, but man was he ruthless.

SUMMARY: The founder is a very educational/fun film. Even though 2017 is just beginning, it is easily going to go down in my Top 10 list by the time this year is over. Do yourselves a favor people, go out and see this one!

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

Hope you guys enjoyed! Don’t forget to give my blog a follow and my Twitter @ThatMoviePerson a follow as well!

Top 8 Actors and Actresses of Today

Posted on

Hey guys I just wanted to give you all a list of who I think the best actors and actresses are in the game today. I composed this list with a mindset of who the great ones are and who are the ones that have the potential of being great. Thank You all for reading!

ACTRESSES:

8. Margot Robbie

Margot_Robbie

Most certainly one of the most and upcoming actresses in the game today. Still a very young woman with nothing but potential in front of her. This woman looks like an amazing Harley Quinn.

7. Anne Hathaway

Actress Anne Hathaway poses at the world premiere of 'Love & Other Drugs' at AFI Fest 2010 in Hollywood

I have been having Anne Hathaway in my praises for a very long time. Her performances in films such as Love & Other Drugs, One Day, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar have always left an affect on me. Her ability to create raw emotion is untouched in the film industry.

6. Viola Davis

viola davis

I haven’t seen much from Ms. Davis, but I have seen enough to know she is a super talent. I will never forget her stellar performance in Prisoners and I hear she’s incredible in How To Get Away with Murder. So much potential for this woman!

5. Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet turns 40

How can we forget this British beauty? From her amazing work in Titanic to Revolutionary Road to Steve Jobs, This woman has the skills and range for any role thrown her way.

4. Meryl Streep

20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Red Carpet

Do I have to say much? This queen has Hollywood and the people in it around her finger. A true legend of acting, grace, and humbleness. I have nothing but amazing things to say about this lady. Such beauty and class….. I will always love Meryl Streep!

3.Shailene Woodley

Shailene-Woodley-smile-face-real-beauty

It’s fair to say that I am still salty about Woodley not getting an Oscar Nom for The Fault In Our Stars. This girl is only 24 and has the skill of a 40 year veteran. I have never seen someone with such passion and skill. One of the very best in the business easily.

2. Brie Larson

Brie Larson

You didn’t think I was going to leave out the reigning/defending 2016 Best Actress Oscar winner did you? I have had my eye on this woman since Short Term 12 and I knew the potential she had once I saw that. She is already great and has nothing but time and room to grow. I see multiple Oscars for her by the time it’s all said and done.

1. Alicia Vikander

alicia-vikander-02

It’s very hard to put into words how I feel about Alicia Vikander. This lady can not seem to stop and take a break. She is literally in just about everything these days! From her work in The Danish Girl (She won Best Supporting Actress Oscar), Ex Machina, Jason Bourne etc… The list goes on and with this super talented and amazingly beautiful woman! She owns acting right now in my opinion and I do not see her letting up.

ACTORS:

8. Matt Damon

Matt Damon

I don’t think I have ever went into a movie theater to see a movie with Matt Damon in it and not like it. This guy is a natural born actor and seems to keep raising his very high bar with each film he does. Good Will Hunting is also one of my favorite movies ever!

7. Tom Hardy

Tom-Hardy-Wallpaper

You know what’s crazy about Tom Hardy? It’s that I don’t even feel like the guy has reached his full potential. I feel like his ceiling is as high as the sky. Hardy has already turned in some amazing performances in films such Warrior, Bronson, and The Revenant. I see this guy getting better and better with an eventual Oscar in front of him one day.

6. Jake Gyllenhaal

jake-gyllenhaal-sag-2015-billboard-650

We all know how I feel about my man Jake G! This guy sweeps me off my feet every time I see him. His work in Nighcrawler was absolutely bone chilling. I will never be able to shake that performance. I love this man and I will leave it at that.

5. Christian Bale

Christian-Bale-1

We all knew this guy was coming! Christian Bale is just purely phenomenal. This guy is the king of committing to roles. His work in The Fighter will always be in the back of my mind. Nothing but respect for a master like himself. He’s freaking Batman for goodness sake!

4. Robert De Niro

Robert-De-Niro

What else do I have to say about this one? He’s a legend and will forever be one of the greatest pioneers of film for me. The confidence and composure of De Niro make him one of the greats for me.

3. Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington Visits "Late Show With David Letterman"

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t consider putting this man at number 1. When I think of Denzel I think of the word swag. This guy just has a swagger, dazzle, charm, and intensity that can not be touched. Watching Denzel act is just so soothing and relaxing. Nothing but love for my man Denzel!

2. Tom Hanks

tomhanks600

You can’t make a Top 8 Actors list and not put Tom Hanks in it! From Forest Gump, Cast Away, Captain Phillips and many more…. This man simply can not be touched when is on point. (p.s: He’s always on point).

1. Leonardo Dicaprio

leonardo-dicaprio-east-los-angeles-oscar

Are you surprised? Probably not, but we all know who my number 1 forever and always is! This guy can act man, there is no matching his commitment, intensity, focus, and pure brilliance that he brings to the screen. I call this man the best to ever do it and he has many more masterpieces to come.

Jason Bourne (2016) Review

Posted on

What’s up guys!? I have returned to writing reviews after a brief hiatus due to some classes I was taking. I am back and ready to review and boy I have a good one for you guys. The new Jason Bourne was released today and I have all the quick information you need to know on whether you should see it or not.

Jason-Bourne-2016-Movie-Wallpaper-07

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT RIGHT:

1. Man…. Alicia Vikander CAN ACT!!! I mean her role isn’t anything that’s gonna win her an Oscar (which she already has) but she definitely embodies the intensity and seriousness of this role. She just gave this role that touch that makes an action movie great. I have nothing but great things to say about Ms. Vikander. She is on a streak of wins like no other.

2. Is there anything you can say about Matt Damon that isn’t good? I mean this guy was born to play Jason Bourne (no pun intended). Damon once again shines as Jason Bourne as he takes on another action packed, tense, and dramatic adventure. Another great performance as Damon tackles Bourne for a fourth time.

3. Paul Greengrass has to be considered one of the best thriller/action directors of this generation. This guy can make an action film. What I find with most action movies is that the story is dull, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with any Greengrass movie. Stellar direction and pace is the trademark of any Greengrass film and this one does not disappoint.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT WRONG:

1. Although the movie as a whole keeps a very high pace and intensity, the beginning moments of the film seem very slow.

2. Writing had a few holes in it. Nothing terrible though.

Jason Bourne

SUMMARY: The fourth Jason Bourne installment makes the case as the best one yet. Action, pace, great acting, and brilliant direction make this another great addition to a great series. I hope this isn’t and don’t think this the last we see of Jason Bourne. I would recommend to any and all fans of action!

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5/10

Thanks for taking the time to read this review guys! Be on the look for some more material coming real soon. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Don’t forget to give this blog a follow and my and my Twitter a follow @ThatMoviePerson. Happy Reviewing!

The Revenant (2016) Review

Posted on

Man…. I have always admired the way a film is shot. This one takes the cake for one some of the best pure cinematography jobs I have ever seen. The Revenant tells the true tale of Hugh Glass and his wild embark throughout the wilderness as he chases the man who left him for dead. I loved this film and could not get over it days after I had seen it. I didn’t expect less from Leonardo Dicaprio and Alejandro G. Inarritu teaming up.

revenant-gallery-03-gallery-image

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT RIGHT:

1. I will say this and I don’t feel this is a bold statement. Leonardo Dicaprio is the best actor to ever grace the film industry and he owns this film. The man finally got his well deserved Oscar and I couldn’t be happier. I love this man, his work, and his performance were beyond amazing in this film. Keep being awesome Leo!

2. Even though I wasn’t a fan of his work on Birdman, Alejandro G. Inarritu does a masterful job of directing this masterpiece. His flow, shots, vision, intensity can not be matched and this man is well deserving of his 2nd consecutive Best Director Oscar

3. Tom Hardy was purely brilliant as John Fitzgerald… Tom Hardy has broke through the film industry and he was robbed of a Best Supporting Actor win, the man will not be denied much longer.

4. The Cinematography…. OMG!!!! It was so raw, pure, and balanced. I couldn’t get over the shots in this film. Emmanuel Lubezki is a master cinematographer and is more than deserving of his 3rd consecutive Oscar.

5. Supporting system is there in this one. Supporting actors are all on point as well as the writing. Amazing storytelling and brilliant acting all around.

THINGS THE MOVIE GOT WRONG:

1. There were a few slow/boring moments

maxresdefault (1)

SUMMARY: Overall, I would recommend The Revenant to almost anyone (If you like action that is). The pure, raw, and brilliant performances in this one make it one for the ages. I don’t think another film will be shot this well ever again. This film is one for the ages.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.6/10
